October is Museums and Galleries Month!
History should not repeat itself and should always be remembered. Museums and galleries serve as the home of memories that will narrate stories and events from the past. They are a dedicated space for the works of many artists, inventions of our scientists, discoveries and findings of archeologists, and specimens such as fossils and artifacts from antiquity.
In our country, the University of Santo Tomas Museum was considered the oldest existing museum in the Philippines, was formally established in 1869, to comply with the 1865 Reglamento de Segunda Ensenanza that required all first-class colleges to have a Museo de Historia Natural. Initially located in Intramuros, the UST Museum was later transferred to its present site at the paraninfo of the UST Main Building, built in 1928 in the Sampaloc district of Manila.
Moreover, The Institute for Climate Change and Environmental Management (ICCEM) of Central Luzon State University also has a museum. A natural history and biodiversity museum dedicated to different ecosystems in the Philippines. In celebration of #MGM2022, the institute will re-launch the newly renovated The ICCEM Museum (TIM) in the 4th quarter of 2022.
This year' #MGM2022 theme "Embracing Uncertainty: Showcasing Solidarity, Hope, and Recovery" honors the resilience and resourcefulness of the Filipino in overcoming the global pandemic as it moves forward to a new normal.

ICCEM workforce takes part in the movement for a cleaner planet today, September 30, 2022.
Faculty and staff join forces in clearing up the ICCEM Conservation Park, BINHI Conservation Park, and other facilities in the office in celebration of the World Cleanup Day.
Each year the World Cleanup Day unifies millions of people from different walks of life. Volunteers, organizations, and governments from across 191 countries in the world work hand in hand through cleanup drives, in order to address waste problem, to achieve a sustainable world. With this endeavor, ICCEM invites everyone to join with the movement every year so that each of us can contribute to a cleaner planet. Let us make a move today, pick up a trash on your way!

[read more]As part of this year's observance of the Month of the Ocean (MOO), the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) reminds the public of the need for ocean water conservation.
"This year's MOO subject is 'Protect and Restore Ecosystems and Biodiversity,'" according to the DENR.
The theme was taken from UNESCO's Ocean Decade Challenge 2, which is based on the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development motto, "The Science We Need for the Ocean We Want" (2021-2030).
Under changing environmental and societal conditions, the theme attempts to understand the effects of many stressors on ocean ecosystems and create strategies to manage and restore ecosystems and their rich biological variety.
The commemoration of #MOO2022 provides an excellent chance to introduce the key issue of Ecosystem Restoration, which aims to prevent, slow, and reverse ecosystem deterioration on every continent and in every ocean.
By virtue of Pres. Proc. No. 57, published in 1998, the Month of the Ocean (MOO) is commemorated every May.

[read more]The SAFE > GRS > FOSHE Project organized a two-day seminar workshop on biodiversity conservation and the application of LiDAR technology on May 04–05, 2022 in the Municipality of Abucay, Bataan.
Engr. Eliza Camaso and Engr. Guiller Damian imparted the knowledge and transferred the skills on LiDAR Technology as applied in the planning and assessment of the LGU. Biodiversity conservation of forest, agriculture, and coastal ecosystems was presented by Ms. Kathrina M. Mapanao, Mr. Roberto D. Pelayo, and Ms. Jo Adrianne Espiritu. The seminar was concluded by a policy forum to identify the benefits obtained from those ecosystems, problems encountered and their corresponding causes, effects, and possible interventions. The major concerns raised by the participants are the illegal logging and lack of arable land, which affect the production of crops. The issues affecting coastal ecosystems identified by the stakeholders included waste generation by informal settlers and the use of illegal fishing methods were the issues affecting coastal ecosystems identified by the stakeholders. The two-day activity was participated by farmers, fisherfolks, Municipal Agricultural Fishery Council (MAFC), Agricultural Extension Worker (AEW), and Municipal Agriculture Office staff. Ms. Angella Tolentino and Ms. Teodora A. Polo served as facilitators.

[read more]No one knows how many Philippine Forest Turtles (Siebenrockiella leytensis) are left in the wild, but according to Pierre Fidenci, President of Endangered Species International in San Francisco, the number is quickly dwindling due to illegal trade.
The forest turtle was thought to be extinct until scientists spotted three turtles for sale in a local market in 2001. Since then, the island of Palawan has had only one population, which is rapidly dwindling. "It's now very difficult, if not impossible, to find the Philippine Forest Turtle in certain creeks where it used to be abundant," Fidenci says.

Climate change adaptation is particularly important for developing countries, where societies are already struggling to meet the challenges posed by existing climate variability (Yamin et al. 2005; Adger et al., 2003; Handmer, 2003; Kates, 2000; Watson and Ackerman 2000), and are thus expected to be the most adversely affected by climate change (McCarthy et al., 2001).
According to the recent Fourth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), "adaptation will be required to address impacts resulting from the warming that is already unavoidable due to past emissions" (IPCC, 2007: 18). As a result, it advocates for adaptation as a complementary response strategy to mitigation.

The biodiversity conservation of forest, agriculture and coastal ecosystems was presented by Mr. Daryl Juganas, Dr. Gella Patria Abella and Ms. Jo Adrianne Espiritu. Policy forum followed shortly to identify the benefits obtained from those ecosystems, problems encountered and their corresponding causes, effects and possible interventions. This was actively participated by barangay chairs, farmers, fisherfolks and Municipal Agriculture Office staff. Major concern raised by the participants is the illegal cutting of trees which adversely affects the water supply for agricultural production. Wastes generated by tourists and use of illegal fishing methods were the issues on coastal ecosystems identified by the stakeholders.
On Day 2, Engr. Eliza Camaso and Engr. Guiller Damian provided the knowledge and transferred the skills on LiDAR Technology as applied in the planning and assessment of the local government unit. Ms. Kathrina Mapanao and Ms Teodora Polo served as facilitators.
